Boom Times for Buoy Racers
Although sailing was not an included sport in the Commonwealth Games at Manchester UK this summer, there was nonetheless a requirement for marker buoys to keep Triathlon athletes on course.
Games organisers approached Gosport UK based Crewsaver with a request for more than the usual marker buoys, spending some £30,000 to acquire the biggest inflatable buoys Crewsaver has ever manufactured.
Swimming comprises the first portion of the Triathlon event, when there is a mass start.
Each competitor had to complete two laps around Manchester’s Salford Quays Dock Basin before continuing with a 40km bicycle ride and a 10km run.
With so many athletes in the water at the same time it was important the course be clearly marked, hence the order for thirteen 10m by 1m buoys and four 3m by 1m buoys. The longer ‘boom’ buoys were positioned to funnel swimmers into the turning point at each corner of the course.
