AWARDS: The winner of the annual James Dyson Awards will be announced on 7 November 2013 and three marine products are in the running for the grand prize.
Hydros is a three piece personal flotation device invented from Ireland that mitigates the effects of cold water shock, sea spray, hypothermia, and secondary drowning.
Two entries in the running are from the UK. Firstly, the Team O back pull life jacket and harness which is designed to overcome the problem of being dragged through the water face down when a lifejacket tether is attached to a vessel.
Renewable wave power (RWP) is a semi-submersible device which harnesses wave power in the Orkneys.
The James Dyson Award is an international design award that celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of design engineers.
It’s open to product design, industrial design and engineering university level students (or graduates within four years of graduation), who have studied in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, UK and USA.
There are 20 finalists in the running to win the prize of £30,000. Two International runners-up will receive £10,000 and a certificate of excellence and there will be national winners each of whom will receive £2,000.
Last year’s winner, SafetyNet, designed by Dan Watson, is a series of illuminated rings that allow young and unmarketable fish to escape from the trawler net.
