Energy giants implement joint wind project
Two multi-national energy firms have joined forces not only in investing in an offshore wind farm but also in delivering the power produced to the Dutch grid.
RWE and TotalEnergies have each put 50% in to the OranjeWind offshore wind farm in the North Sea about 53 kilometres from IJmuiden on the Dutch coast.
The Final Investment Decision has been taken and the partners say suppliers for the main components have been chosen.
This project, the partners say, is unique in that they will ’leverage synergies’ to make this the first system integration project on the Dutch market.
“It aims to perfectly match intermittent wind power generation with flexible energy demand and will thus contribute to grid stability,” they say. ”To this end, TotalEnergies and RWE are committed to implementing flexible demand solutions across different locations across the Netherlands.”
One of the problems with wind power is its intermittency, although quite how the companies will deal with it has not been disclosed.
“In order to address the challenges presented by matching intermittent electricity production from renewables with flexible demand for energy, a key part of the OranjeWind project is its integration into the Dutch energy system,” say the partners. “To this end, each partner will deliver their allocated part of system integration solutions, including electrolysers, smart charging solutions for electric vehicles, e-boilers for heating and battery storage.”
Offshore work is due to begin at the beginning of 2026, with full commissioning expected in 2028.
