Seaonics unveils offshore charger for electric SOVs
Norwegian company Seaonics is advancing the efficiency of offshore wind operations with its new charging solution which cuts down on the need to return to port.
The innovative Ocean Charger solution allows electric Service Operation Vessels (SOVs) to charge directly from offshore wind turbines, reducing reliance on diesel fuel and offering a sustainable, cost-effective alternative for windfarm operations.
“We’re the first in the market, and already in discussions with wind farm developers,” said Bjørnar Huse, sales manager at Seaonics.
“This technology is a game-changer for offshore renewables, as it significantly reduces operational costs while enhancing sustainability.”
Growing demand
During testing, the Ocean Charger delivered 6 MW of charge using 11 kV current from a wind turbine to the hybrid-electric CSOV, REM Power.
The Ocean Charger is designed to meet the growing demand for zero-emission vessels in the offshore wind sector.
Its ability to charge vessels while they remain offshore not only saves time but also lowers the overall cost of operations. The system uses industry-standard connectors, making it adaptable for use across various windfarms and vessels.
As windfarms expand and the offshore renewables sector grows, the Ocean Charger’s ability to power electric SOVs offshore positions it as a key innovation.
