WATCH: Allseas unveils offshore nuclear plan
Offshore engineering giant Allseas has announced a bold five-year initiative to design, develop and deploy a small modular reactor for use on offshore vessels and in industrial onshore environments.
The maritime sector accounts for roughly 3% of global CO₂ emissions, with current alternative fuels struggling to meet the energy demands of long-range or remote operations. Nuclear offers a high-density, carbon-free solution, while onshore SMRs could ease grid strain and provide reliable heat and power for industrial clusters.
“Continuity and preservation for future generations are central to how we work,” said Stephanie Heerema, project manager nuclear developments at Allseas. “We’ve built our reputation on turning bold ideas into ground-breaking solutions – nuclear is our next step.”
The company plans to use high-temperature gas-cooled reactors producing 25 MWe, citing their passive safety features and use of TRISO fuel – tiny, robust particles designed to contain fission products even under extreme conditions.
Allseas’ roadmap includes design studies, prototype development and regulatory engagement with ANVS, IMO and IAEA, targeting a 2030 production launch. Initial deployment is expected onshore, before expanding to vessels and broader industry use.
The initiative has drawn support from major research and safety partners including TU Delft, TNO, NRG PALLAS and Lloyd’s Register.
Backers say the project could position the Netherlands as a leader in net-zero maritime technology and strengthen Europe’s energy autonomy.
