Clean emissions are at the forefront of JCB’s range of diesel engines, marinised for marine use by Mermaid Marine.
The latest four cylinder engine to be launched by Mermaid Marine is the J-444TCAE, based on the JCB Dieselmax 444 turbocharged and intercooled engine.
Billed as the fastest and cleanest diesel engine range in the world, JCB has worked closely with leading suppliers of parts and equipment to produce engines which have high power and high torque at low speed with favourable fuel consumption.
The design takes into account future emission requirements. JCB is reaching Stage IIIB (Tier 4 Interim)-anti pollution standards without particle filter or after-treatment of the exhaust gases, having addressed the issue of emissions at source.
“JCB has invested many millions of Euros into developing its new combustion system,”Mermaid Marine sales executive Malcolm Pratt explained. “It’s probably the cleanest engine on the market, with no after treatment needed for the exhaust, which is a big advantage.”
Not only is weight saved but also the engine can fit into smaller spaces, said Mr Pratt. There are also savings in fuel and less heat is produced by the exhaust after treatment.
The main characteristics of the JCB engine are the absence of a particle filter and exhaust after-treatment. Using EGR (exhaust gas recirculation), the burnt exhaust gases are cooled and partly fed back to the engine. Provided these exhaust gases don’t contain oxygen, they help to reduce the temperature in the combustion chambers.
“Manufacturers can either develop their engines clean at the beginning or use additional exhaust cleaners afterwards, said Mr Pratt. “Compared to previous JCB engines, fuel savings of between 5 to 10% are achieved.”
The JCB engine is the latest to be released by JCB and Mermaid Marine, completing the four cylinder JCB range which runs from the J-444NA at 85 hp to the J-444TCAE at 160 hp.
The J-444TCAE has 160 hp at 2,200 rpm with a maximum torque of 525 Nm at 1,300 rpm. The Delphi common rail injection system works with high pressure (2,000 bar) and the shape of the combustion chambers are used for optimum combustion. The turbo from Borg Warner has a variable geometry.
The complete four cylinder range will be available now, with future scope for a six cylinder range from Mermaid Marine using JCB’s newly launched six cylinder industrial engine.
