Robert Allan Ltd has designed a new generation of high endurance self righting search and rescue lifeboats for the Canadian Coast Guard.
The new 19m Canadian design has been based on similar vessels known as the Severn class, operated by the UK’s Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).
The lifeboats, which can reach up to 23.5 knots, can operate in 12m seas and are capable of safe operation in extreme weather up to Beaufort Force 12 conditions, often found year round in the waters off Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.
The new hulls have a central skag and aft propeller tunnels, developing into flared, knuckled bow sections with double spray chains forward. They are also fitted with an eleven stern deck for towing operations and reduced freeboard amidships for recovering survivors form the water.
Typical of all Robert Allan designs, significant noise and vibration reduction measures have been implemented throughout, including mounted main engines, gearboxes, exhaust silencer systems, ventilation intake air silencers, sound dampening deck treatments and insulation measures.
The construction of 10 vessels of this Class is being considered by the Canadian Coast Guard to replace existing Arun Class vessels, which it says are reaching the end of their service life.
