Dutch Launch Vessel Evacuation Decision Research Project
A high powered team has begun a research project in Holland which aims to investigate important factors that occur during the evacuation process on board ships and to subsequently develop technologies and procedures to make this process more efficient.
Imtech Marine & Offshore, P&O Ferries, the shipyard van der Giessen-de Noord, TNO Bouw and TNO Technische Menskunde have formed the research team to improve safety when evacuating passengers and crew.
The Royal Dutch Navy, the Dutch Shipping Inspectorate, Lloyds Register and KVNR are also involved in the research.
The project is subsidised by Senter.
The high quality and broad makeup of the project team should guarantee optimum choices in the approach to the evacuation problem. The research result will contribute to the development of an advanced Evacuation Decision Support System (EDSS) among other things. EDSS will actively advise the ship’s master regarding crucial decision making during calamities.
Research areas include: revision of signalling on board ships, insight into human factors during evacuations; the spread of fire and smoke; improving design parameters with respect to interiors and accommodation;
influencing the spread of fire and smoke using heating, the ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technology; using new detection and escape route systems; the impact of list on evacuation times; and research into the use of human detection systems.
