IACS to Update IMO Model Training Courses
The International Association of Classification Societies has, at the request of the IMO, agreed to undertake a revision of six of the IMOs set of model training courses. The courses are intended to assist maritime training institutes and their teaching staff.
IACS members will review the technical content of the courses to ensure they reflect current regulatory requirements, including the series of amendments to the SOLAS Convention. This review is now underway and is scheduled for completion by December of this year.
IACS Permanent Secretary Richard Leslie said: ‘IACS’s appointment by the IMO to undertake this important updating project recognises our members’ technical expertise and commitment to improved maritime safety. The IMO courses cover the requirements for initial and periodical surveys as specified in the SOLAS Convention.
‘Since the IMO model courses were first introduced, the SOLAS Convention has been amended many times. The courses need to reflect significant changes in SOLAS requirements, such as the mandatory application of the ISM Code, the Enhanced Survey Programme for tankers and bulk carriers and new safety measures for the latter type of ship.’
The six model courses comprise: Survey of Machinery Installations, Survey of Electrical Installations, Survey of Fire Appliances and Provisions, Survey of Lifesaving Appliances and Arrangements, Survey of Hull and Structural Surveys, and Surveys of Navigational Aids and Equipment. They are aimed at fully qualified master mariners, chief engineers, naval architects/ marine engineers and those engaged in structural surveying, ship construction and repair.
