SARIS System Charts Safety at seawork
Exhibiting at seawork2002 is BMT Marine Information Systems Limited (MIS), the British Maritime Technology subsidiary which focuses on the production of user driven environmental software modelling and information systems as well as consultancy services.
Over the past ten years, MIS has been involved in research programmes and commercial projects concerned with applied oceanography, coastal management, navigational safety, real-time oceanographic instrumentation and marine environmental pollution.
One of MIS’s flagship systems is the Search and Rescue Information System (SARIS), a PC-based search and rescue planning system. Now in version 2, SARIS is now used by over ten SAR authorities and navies around the world.
SARIS is an integrated system predicting search areas and search patterns for people, objects and vessels lost at sea. Using methodologies developed by the UK Coastguard, the system establishes the most probable search area based on a range of error and statistical deviations.
The latest version incorporates a comprehensive suite of tools allowing the SAR planner to rapidly determine the best use of Search and Rescue Units in the search area. The system has been designed to operate anywhere in the world using in-built databases of oceanography based on the best available tidal and ocean current data for a given region and Admiralty standard electronic charts.
