Dredging scheduled for River Nene

Dredging work along the River Nene in Northampton UK is due to start shortly in order to improve navigation on the waterway.

The Environment Agency is expected to remove some 1,500 m³ of silt from the stretch outside the Carlsberg Brewery in Bridge Street before starting work to remove 7,000 m³ of silt next to the White Water centre in Bedford Road.

Kevin O’Neill, the Environment Agency’s operations delivery team leader, said, ‘The dredging is important to maintain the river channel for navigation, as well as helping to prevent flooding associated with the River Nene. The works have been designed to minimise any disruption to the public and to have minimal environmental impact.’

The eight week project is designed to improve the depth of the river for boaters as well as increasing its capacity to take extra water, reducing the risk of flooding.

The surplus silt will also be used to strengthen flood defences near Bedford Road
