The standard dredger has been enhanced by many options to fulfil the local operational requirements. The dredger Ononaku will work on an oil company project together with its bigger sister Princess Ona.

The standard dismountable dredger is of well proven design, enhanced by a number of options. The standard dredging depth was increased by 2m, resulting in a vessel now capable of working to 14 m. Anchor booms and winches were also added, the anchor booms shifting the dredger’s anchors without the requirement for an auxiliary vessel. Efficiency is also boosted by the addition of a spud carriage pontoon. This simple addition to the standard dredger facilitates dredging using the 3.5m cylinder stroke, which minimises manoeuvring.

The dredger has been fitted out with an accommodation unit, on top of which the control cabin is placed for an optimal view of both the deck and the job site. The accommodation unit is equipped with a galley, a seating area and a sanitary space. The unit includes fresh water and wastewater tanks plus an air conditioning unit. A mast with navigation lights is fitted, as well as four floodlights and a searchlight. On the portside pontoon a jib crane was added to handle spares in and out of the store.

The dredger is due to arrive in Port Harcourt this month, where in will work in the Niger Delta on a project for the Shell Petroleum Development Company alongside its sister vessel, the Damen CSD500 named Princess Ona. The dredging contract in the swampy area has expanded and contractor Fiddil Nigeria Ltd was happy that a Damen dredger could quickly be made available to help out.
