New contract for Jurong Island extension
Dredging International Asia Pacific Pte Ltd (DIAP), in a joint venture with Starhigh Asia Pacific Pte Ltd, has been awarded a design and build contract for 148ha of land reclamation.
DIAP, the South East Asia regional subsidiary of Belgium’s DEME Group, will be working on an extension to Jurong Island for the account of the Singapore Government’s largest industrial landlord, JTC (Jurong Town Corporation).
The works under the contract comprise sand bund construction with shore protection, dredging for deepening of the shoreline, basin and channel realignment, soil improvement works, sand supply, re-use of marine dredged and land based excavated material, and construction of roads, drains and sewers as well as preparation of a site for vacuum consolidation research. A part of the Temasek Fairway and West Jurong Channel will be realigned and deepened to the specified levels.
The €625m project will be developed in three reclamation phases, a part being executed by DIAP. DIAP will deploy spud grab dredgers and its own self-propelled trailing suction hopper dredger for the works, which commenced in mid-December and will be finished by the end of 2017 for Phases 1 and 2. Works for Phase 3 are to be completed by mid-August 2018.
The works on this project will be executed according to the provisions of the environmental assessment and the requirements of the environmental monitoring and management programme and navigational safety. The high environment and workplace safety standards required by DEME shall also be implemented throughout the project.
This JIWE contract is another addition to the world’s third largest oil refining and petrochemical hub built on Jurong Island in the western part of Singapore.
Since the first years of the 1990s, DIAP has been involved in West Singapore’s industrial land extensions through awarded contracts under phases 1 and 2 amalgamation of the seven existing smaller islands into a single Jurong Island and its further huge extensions under phases 3 and 4 (completion due at the end of November 2013).
These previous contracts were awarded in combination with the complementary large scale extension of the Singapore main island of the Tuas View peninsula. They have led to this JIWE contract for the creation of today’s Jurong Island as a part of Singapore national development.
