Tideway in The Netherlands is claiming a newrecord for stone dumping at depth during a recent project west of Ibiza in theMediterranean, when Tideways vessel Rollingstoneplaced 20,000m3 of rock at a depth of 987m, working on behalf of Spanish energycompany Enagas.

Tideway said rock has never been installed at this depth before. The rock was being placed to protect the Enagas Balearic Pipeline, a submarine gas pipeline being built between the Denia and Ibiza and Mallorca. Tideway is responsible for dredging the trench for the pipeline, constructing the landfalls, and protection and stabilization of the pipeline. The aim of the Enagas project is to supply the Balearic Islands with natural gas.

Tideway has been working with the Italian pipelay contractor Saipem on the project, and noted that the previous depth record was 780m on the Malampaya Development Project in the Philippines, a project commissioned by Shell.

Rollingstone used its fallpipe to ensure that the rock was deposited at exactly the right place whilst the vessel was held in place using its DP system.
