Van Oord to dredge Marker Wadden channel

Dutch dredging and marine contractor Van Oord has won a contract for dredging an extra channel to the south of the Marker Wadden.

The Marker Wadden is a project aimed at creating islands and a fresh water nature reserve in the Netherlands’ Markermeer.

The channel to be dredged by Van Oord will create space for the underwater capture of silt, contributing to restoring the environmental and water quality of the Markermeer and also to the objectives of the Future-Proof Ecological System (FPES).

Dredging an additional channel of some 900m will make a major contribution to the construction of Marker Wadden. Van Oord will deploy the cutter suction dredger Biesbosch to dredge the channel, with some of the sand won used to reinforce the southern edge of the first island.
