Young CEDA events in Delft and Hamburg
The Dutch Section of Young CEDA hosted an event recently at the Delft University of Technology to give students and young professional an insight into working in the dredging industry.
The seminar was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ir. Cees van Rhee, Professor of Dredging Engineering, at the TU Delft.
Guests heard firsthand from a number of young professionals from different areas of the dredging industry, who gave presentations on their experiences in the industry in the first years of their career. Speakers included Jort van Wijk (IHCM/TU Delft), Wouter Ockeloen (Van Oord), Jaap van Thiel de Vries (Boskalis) and Pim van Leeuwen and Hans Wortelboer (Dutch Dredging).
Presentations were followed by a general discussion on the differences in working for larger dredging companies compared with smaller companies.
70 students from different universities and colleges around the country, with interests in hydraulic engineering, maritime engineering and dredging engineering, attended the event. They were given a thorough overview of the opportunities available in the dredging industry and continued discussions with the speakers, and other dredging professionals, over drinks at the end of the seminar.
Three days later, Christoph Tiggesbӓumker of Young CEDA’s German section had organised a one day event in the Port of Hamburg hosted by Hamburg Port Authority (HPA). It was attended by 30 students from four universities in the vicinity of Hamburg (Hannover, Oldenburg, Lübeck and Suderburg).
The event started with general presentations on the port, its organisation and its dredging programme. The group then visited the METHA facility that treats contaminated dredged material. The excursion ended with a boat trip through the port, focussing on dredging equipment, and there was ample opportunity for delegates to network with professionals and observe port activities and dredging operations. As an extra treat, the group witnessed the launch of one of the largest container ships in the world – the Christophe Colomb, for shipping company CMA CGM.
Young CEDA is looking forward to running more seminars in the future and currently has plans for events in the UK in the autumn.
