Largest LNG ferry for France
Brittany Ferries and STX St Nazaire shipyard are working together to build what they say will be the world’s largest LNG-fuelled ferry for a total cost of €270m.
Brittany Ferries says the new vessel will also be the cleanest, most environmentally-friendly ship to operate in UK waters because LNG emits around 25% less carbon dioxide during combustion than marine fuel oil and burns with no smoke.
Mike Bevens, Group Commercial Director comments: “This represents a huge investment which will benefit not simply our customers but the environment as well.”
“No other ferry in the UK will come close to offering this new ship’s range of facilities and its launch will mark the beginning of a new era in ferry travel,” he added.
The vessel will be 210m length, 32m beam and will be capable of carrying 2,474 passengers and reaching speeds of up to 24.5 knots.
It will be built at STX in St Nazaire and will replace Brittany Ferries’ current flagship, Pont-Aven, which will move to the Portsmouth-St Malo route.
The vessel is due to enter service in late spring 2017.
