ABPmer to provide specialist advice to coastal defence scheme

ABP Marine Environmental Research Ltd (ABPmer) has been appointed as part of a consortia lead by Martin Wright Associates to undertake the necessary works to deliver a coastal defence scheme at Rhyl in Wales.

The contract was awarded by Denbighshire County Council and consists of the Project Management, Design and Contract Supervision for proposed river, estuarial and coastal defence work at the western end of their Rhyl frontage. The work will require full planning and environmental support, integrating the coastal defence scheme with the iconic new cycle bridge over the River Clwyd.

The design will consider the effects of predicted sea level rise associated with climate change as well as the existing problem of overtopping during storm conditions and the associated flooding risks.

ABPmer has been commissioned to undertake modelling and a coastal processes assessment, as well as any necessary site survey in support of design development and related environmental impact assessment and planning documentation for the coastal defence scheme.

The anticipated construction costs are likely to be in the region of £10m and the works will probably be a combination of rock armour, sheet piled walling, stepped reinforced concrete promenade and revetment walling. The scheme is due to start on site in 2010 and will protect the western area of Rhyl from flooding and significantly reduce the risk to private dwellings and commercial properties.
