Anglo-German onboard ECDIS training accord
ECDIS manufacturer Martek Marine of Rotherham has teamed with Safebridge and the ECDIS Training Consortium in Hamburg to provide type-specific computer-based training for crew members aboard vessels without internet access while at sea.
Services to be provided by the Yorkshire company under the partnership include adoption of its Vessel Training Kit (VTK), a stand-alone simulation training system using a specially-designed and modified laptop PC equipped with virtual machines running its iECDIS software in a contained and encrypted format.
Trainees have access to Live-Learning and Video-Learning Functions as an offline system. Once training has been successfully completed, test results are uploaded and an e-certificate subsequently issued via a Safebridge server; alternatively a certificate can be sent to a nominated crew manager onshore for issue. According to Steve Coulson, Martek Marine’s business development director, the VTK system has been widely commissioned by traditional shipping sectors as well as offshore and workboat users since its introduction early last year.
