Cardiff Bay project for Coastline Surveys
Falmouth UK based Coastline Surveys announced at last month’ s Seawork Exhibition that it has been awarded a second two year contract by Cardiff Harbour Authority for surveys of Europe’ s largest waterfront development, housing what was once the world’ s biggest coal exporting port.
Cardiff Bay has since been transformed into a massive 500 acre freshwater lake with 8 miles of waterfront following construction of a barrage for the resident harbour, completed in 1999. The barrage eliminates the effects of one of the world’s greatest tidal ranges, which at up to 14m, had previously restricted access to the harbour for as much as 14 hours a day. Coastline Surveys’ remit covers monthly monitoring of siltation within harbour confines and the Bay using a combination of a 15m steel tug and a smaller 5m inshore vessel for shallow water monitoring right into the city of Cardiff. According to newly-appointed General Manager Marcus Noakes, it is one of a number of contracts to have been recently obtained by the company for survey type projects in Falmouth, Liverpool Bay and off the Isle of Wight. Following the establishment of a new Geotechnical Division with an office and purpose built soil testing laboratory facilities in Lowestoft, Marcus Noakes anticipates further company growth in mainland Europe using an expanding range of resources which includes the permanently crewed 24m survey vessel,
