Fugro EMU completes MCA project
Fugro EMU of Durley, Southampton, which claims to be the UK’s largest commercial marine environmental services organisation, has concluded its involvement in the 2011-2013 Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Civil Hydrography Programme with acquisition of the last of over 15bn bathymetric soundings.
Working in coastal waters between 2m and 40m contours, the company surveyed over 3,000km2 of seabed off the English, Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish coastlines utilising a fleet of eight dedicated survey vessels. Many of the areas covered were last surveyed by lead line in the 19th century with several of them in Scottish waters having never been charted before. It has resulted in the first collection of high resolution seabed data, including discovery of several previously uncharted wrecks and the reclassification of water depths over existing ones.
