German system for new Indian research vessel

Sindu Sadhana, a new 80m research vessel nearing completion for India’s National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Goa is to be equipped with an all-purpose integrated survey sensor system assembled by Atlas Hydrographic.

The system comprises Deso 35 shallow and deep sea single beam sounders together with comparable dual Hydrosweep multibeam systems and a Parasound parametric deep sea sub-bottom profiler. Peripheral sensors include those for sound velocity, heading and ship motion, positioning, helmsman display and repeaters supported by centralised data storage facilities and onboard post-processing equipment.

Aberdeen UK based Veripos has reportedly been retained to provide GNSS positioning under a three year contract covering use of its Ultra Precise Point Positioning (PPP) service and associated hardware.

Delivery of the complete survey assembly is expected to be completed shortly, with Atlas Hydrographic also carrying out training of NIO operators and scientists at its test lake premises at Bremen in Germany.

Sindu Sadhana is due to begin service early next year, enabling Indian oceanographers to undertake extensive multi-disciplinary studies of national waters in addition to wider sectors of the Indian Ocean.
