Glonass setback in the US
President Barack Obama has signed a bill prohibiting Russia from constructing any stations in the US that could improve the precision of its Glonass network as a worldwide alternative to GPS.
The decision is said to reflect concern that as with GPS, the Glonass system could also be used for military as well as commercial purposes.
As a result of the American decision, there is speculation that it could also create problems for other countries engaged in establishing their own GNSS networks, notably China with its Beidou system and the EU’s Galileo project.
