Klaipeda Harbour seabed mapped
The Lithuanian Coastal Research & Planning Institute (CORPI) reports successful completion of the first ever total coverage survey of Klaipeda Harbour, one of the few ice-free ports in northernmost Europe.
The survey is in a project funded by the EU as part of its Baltic Sea Region programme due to be finalised later this year.
Work was carried out aboard Emma, a survey launch provided by Emma Technologies of Kiel, Germany, equipped with a high resolution GeoAcoustics Geoswath Plus multibeam system. The primary focus of operations was on the mapping of contaminated sediments in development areas using full scale shallow water studies in addition to sidescan imaging and seismic mapping. CORPI survey staff say that the results will be crucial not only for continuing dredging work but also for anticipated future harbour developments.
