MMT’s shark search surveys

Gothenburg based MMT AB, which is presently completing pre-lay surveys for a proposed new 275km subsea cable route linking Danish and Dutch electricity grids, has been retained by Egypt’s Chamber of Diving & Watersports (CDWS).

The job is to map the behaviour and movements of sharks following their widely publicized recent appearance in Sharm el-Sheikh waters. Their impromptu arrival is said to have occasioned disbelief among the Red Sea diving community, not to mention concern for the local tourist industry.

Under the direction of a research team headed by CDWS chairman Hesham Gabr, MMT has been carrying out detailed bottom topography mapping of areas as a means of studying how and where the sharks move. The Swedish company is conducting round the clock studies using its offshore survey vessel, Franklin, accompanied by a nearshore workboat, PlasticBeam.
