New charting deals
Kelvin Hughes, the UK’ s largest Admiralty Chart Agent as well as a leading manufacturer of navaids, has been appointed by the Japanese Hydrographic Association as official distributor for all Japanese W Series paper charts, sailing directions and special publications issued by the Japanese Coast Guard.
The company has already begun distribution of products from its UK head office in Hainault, Essex, but plans to have additional stocks available at its Singapore depot later this year for the benefit of pan-Pacific based customers.
Meanwhile, in Norway, Jeppesen Marine and the Norwegian Hydrographic Service have combined their respective electronic chart services into a single offering, Jeppesen Primar ENC Service. It will provide a single data source that ensures mariners are always navigating with an approved electronic chart whenever it is available, or by switching to private vector data produced by Jeppesen when no such facility is available.
The service will automatically notify navigators either during route planning or navigation of any changes. This, say both organisations, will be of particular importance, as private vector data is not valid as a primary source for legally compliant navigation. The complete facility also features Dynamic Licensing, with navigators paying only for chart licenses actually used during a vessel’s voyage.
