PGS to conduct oil surveys off Crete
Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS) of Norway, which maintains a fleet of 14 offshore seismic survey vessels supported by 21 data processing centres, has been selected by Greece’s Energy Ministry to conduct preliminary research for potential offshore oil and gas deposits south of Crete and off the western mainland.
Research operations are expected to be completed by the end of this year, with data processing due for finalisation around next July. According to Ministry officials, companies will subsequently be invited to carry out systematic exploration and drilling results should be encouraging. Initial research will cover an estimated 87,000 square miles of seabed, extending up to 250 miles offshore.
PGS, in association with fellow Norwegian multinational organisation, TGS, is presently engaged in a similar survey enterprise covering a 20,000 km area in the north east Newfoundland Shelf of Canada.
