Planet Ocean to distribute ultra-portable ROVs

Surrey, UK-based Planet Ocean has been appointed distributor of the Canadian DTG2 Deep Trekker range of ultra-portable mini-ROVs for UK and Ireland. Weighing under 9kg and powered by onboard rechargeable batteries negating any need for bulky surface power supplies, systems can operate for up to 6-8 hours on a single charge.

Design of four basic models is based around a patented pitching capability so that only two thrusters are necessary for complete manoeuvrability. A premium version, Worker, features a dual function grabber and increased thruster power together with a full sensor suite providing on-screen sea water temperature, heading, pitch and roll, depth and camera angle in addition to auto heading and depth capability. Optional accessories include additional lighting, video glasses, crawler wheels, laser scaler, a Tritech Micron sonar and a thickness gauge.

An HD camera feeds live video to an integrated LCD screen on the controller and can be connected to a digital video recorder or TV monitor. DTG2 systems are reportedly in widespread service, with one having been deployed for dramatic search and recovery operations following the MV Sewol ferry capsizing disaster in South Korea last April.
