Ranger 2 USBL for Vietnamese surveys
Vietnamese survey organisation, Thien Nam Positioning JSC, has commissioned a Ranger 2 Ultra Short Baseline (USBL) acoustic positioning system from Hampshire-based Sonardyne International.
Purchased via Sonardyne’s regional office in Singapore, the system will be used to track a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) during installation of a pipe flowline and a gas export pipeline protection mattress in an oilfield offshore Vietnam.
A high-performance position reference system designed for tracking underwater targets and positioning dynamically-positioned (DP) vessels, the system uses USBL methods to calculate positions of subsea targets by measuring the range and bearing from a vessel-mounted transceiver to an acoustic transponder mounted on the target. Multiple subsea targets over a wide area and range of water depths beyond 6,000m can be simultaneously and precisely positioned.
According to Dinh Vu Bah of Thien Nam Positioning, the company is already planning to use the Ranger 2 as a lead item for a number of other Vietnamese offshore ventures.
