Seabeam for latest Alfred Wenger vessel
L-3 ELAC Nautik of Kiel has been commissioned to deliver and install a SeaBeam 1180 shallow water multibeam system aboard Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar & Marine Research’s new 21m vessel being built by Fassmer at its Berne yard in Germany.
Capable of acquiring bathymetric and sidescan data over a swathe width in excess of 150°, the 180 kHz system can log data at a rate of more than 25 pings per second.
Other equipment to be supplied by ELAC Nautik includes sound velocity and positioning sensors in addition to a scientific echo sounder for fishery research. Due for delivery next summer, the as yet unnamed vessel is destined to carry out scientific tasks in the Wadden Sea and operate in waters west of Sylt and Heligoland.
