Survey for world’s longest HVDC route

MMT of Sweden is to carry out bathymetric and geophysical mapping as part of the world’s longest HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) route survey between Iceland and the UK.

It marks the first stage of a proposed subsea cable link providing 1.2GW of sustainable power to two million British homes under plans tabled by Atlantic Superconnection Corporation of London.

The two-month survey will be completed this summer over a route approximately 1470km long over depths down to around 1100m. A combination of MMT’s DP2 support vessel, Stril Explorer, and its Franklin ROV support craft will be used for operations in conjunction with Surveyor Interceptor, a new 5-metre ROV developed by Kystdesign of Norway which is said to operate 4-8 times faster than existing work-class models. Meanwhile, further ahead, MMT has been contracted by ABB to provide a pre-lay and UXO survey next year for a 113km HVDC cable-laying project between Caithness and Moray in northern Scotland.
