UKHO heads for Singapore
The UK Hydrographic Office, which is presently seeking buyers for its German SevenCs and ChartWorld subsidiaries with a combined turnover of €5m, is to open its first overseas office in Singapore.
Michael Cauter, the Taunton based organisation’s deputy chief executive, said the development is in response to Asia becoming the engine of the shipping industry, with the region now accounting for eight of the world’s ten busiest ports. Moreover, he added, the region builds the majority of new commercial vessels while providing more merchant crew than any other continent.
The Singapore operation is said to mark the beginning of a new phase of the UKHO’s long association with the Asian maritime community in the development of navigational products and services. It has traditionally worked closely with many of the region’s hydrographic offices over the last 30 years and with the introduction of the IMO ECDIS mandate for vessels due next year, the association is likely to increase significantly.
Providing local support for Admiralty distributors and a rapidly growing customer base across Asia, the new office has been registered as Admiralty Asia Pacific Pte.
