UXO survey for BorWin 3 wind farm project
N-Sea, the Dutch-based offshore construction support, inspection and maintenance concern, reports successful completion of an unexploded ordnance (UXO) survey and disposal project along the 160km cable route of the proposed North Sea BorWin 3 wind farm link with mainland Germany.
Carried out by the company’s Survey division in Eemshaven using four nearshore and offshore vessels, the eight-month venture involved a series of extensive geophysical multibeam, sidescan sonar, sub-bottom profiling and magnetometer studies of 137 targets within the main cable corridor and adjacent corridors over a total distance of almost 2,000km.
The investigation element of the project resulted in three positively-identified explosives comprising two sea mines and one grenade, all of them destroyed on site under the supervision of the German explosive ordnance disposal service. Currently being constructed by a joint Siemens-Petrofac consortium on behalf of TenneT BV in the Netherlands, the 900MW high voltage DC BorWin3 scheme is expected to become operational in 2019, providing so-called clean electricity to nearly one million German households.
