Alfa Laval has struck a deal to take over BunkerMetric, a Scandinavian software company specialising in decision support tools for the marine bunker sector.

The company will be merged into Alfal Laval’s weather software arm, StormGeo, helping enhance its voyage optimisation services.

“The acquisition of BunkerMetric will further strengthen the StormGeo suite of software products and services,” said Soeren Andersen, chief executive of StormGeo.

BunkerMetric’s procurement optimisation tool will become a subscription service within StormGeo’s existing s-Suite. It will support decisions when buying bunkers, such as the selection of ports, volumes and fuel grades for bunkering.

Shipping companies can use it to minimise costs while taking operational, commercial and environmental factors into account.

“By leveraging BunkerMetric’s deep expertise and proven optimisation tool, StormGeo customers will be able to streamline their operations,” said Mr Andersen. “As well as reducing their bunker procurement costs, they will gain significant fuel savings through optimised real-time decision-making.”

BunkerMetric was co-founded in 2018 by chief executive, Christian Plum, who said that the company was excited to become part of the Alfa Laval family. “Combining BunkerMetric’s state-of-the-art optimisation algorithms and data platforms with StormGeo’s cutting-edge data science will mean valuable synergies for existing and future customers,” he said.

“Like StormGeo, BunkerMetric is committed to digitalisation and decarbonisation. We look forward to joining forces in a way that shrinks both customer expenses and carbon footprint.”
