BMT to publish white paper on hydrogen

Due to be published in August, the paper will look at the feasibilty of such a solution for a typical 50m offshore fast monohull crew boat from a technical perspective, by investigating and comparing a range of existing hydrogen containment solutions.

”Hydrogen is an alternative fuel with the potential of 100% CO2, NOx, SOx and significant particulate emissions reduction. Although technically feasible for larger ships, challenges associated with existing containment solutions and power generation technology presently make hydrogen difficult to use as the sole power source for smaller, lightweight and high-speed commercial vessels such as offshore crew boats,” the company says.

”Dual-fuel engines provide the flexibility to run using hydrogen and diesel as alternative or complementary fuel sources. This leads to significant reductions in emissions when compared to conventional diesel engines, whilst also reducing required hydrogen tank capacities onboard.”

BMT is also investigating using a more novel, much smaller and lighter high-speed dual-fuel engine to provide the same operational capabiltiies as for the medium-speed solution with a focus on direct comparison with a proven 42m diesel-only crew boat.
