New logbook will identify UXO work
Marine Explosive Ordnance operators are being encouraged to log their findings and experience in tracking and disposing of unexploded devices.
The rapid expansion of the offshore wind industry has prompted the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) to publish a logbook that Marine Explosive Ordnance (MEO) operatives can use to record their work in MEO subsea activities.
Divers, diving supervisors, MEO supervisors and other personnel who want to record activities such as survey, identification and disposal can all use the logbook to record what they do in detail, as well as their qualifications and field activities completed.
IMCA says that UXO is not an area it has been involved with before, but its Diving Division Management Committee considered the logbook a logical step in ensuring safety and efficiency in this work.
“Clearly the role played by the specialists involved in MEO subsea work is safety critical and means of assurance that MEO operatives are qualified and competent to perform their duties are essential,” said IMCA Diving Manager Bryan McGlinchy. ”Appropriate use of the IMCA MEO Operations Logbook should help ensure that MEO subsea operations are carried out in a commercially efficient, safe and environmentally acceptable manner by competent personnel.”
The logbook must be used in conjunction with the IMCA Professional Diver’s Logbook, not instead of.
