One container ship repaired in four ports
Corroded scrubber pipes on four vessels have been repaired by underwater repair firm Hydrex.
Belgian underwater repair firm Hydrex has carried out repairs on four ships, in one case following the vessel to four different ports to carry out the work.
In total, six corroded pipes were replaced on three container vessels and a tanker, with each new pipe coated with the Ecospeed coating manufactured by Hydrex sister company Subsea Industries.
The coating can be applied in advance as long as no welding needs to be done near to the coated area, or in situ once the welding has been done.
Hydrex is keen to carry out repairs without interfering with the ship’s schedule, and in the last container ship’s case, engineers had to carry out the work in four different ports – Dunkirk, Le Havre, Antwerp and Rotterdam.
The pipe was examined and had a cofferdam installed in Dunkirk, before sailing for Le Havre, where divers and technicians loaded up the new pipes and equipment.
In Antwerp the damaged scrubber pipe was replaced with a new Ecospeed-coated one, and finally in Rotterdam the cofferdam was removed and a final check carried out.
All pipe replacements were built at Hydrex’s warehouse in Antwerp and installed by the firm’s certified wet and dry welders and technicians.
