Thor makes way for Orion
DEME replaces the god of thunder and lightning Thor with Greek hunter Orion.
Belgian dredging and offshore environmental works firm DEME has added what it calls a ‘game-changing installation concept’ to its fleet.
To make way for the new vessel, DEME has stood down the jack-up installation vessel Thor, which the firm said had been sold to German shipping and logistics company Harren & Partner.
New offshore installation vessel Orion has a 5,000 tonne crane and an installed power of 44,180kW.
”At 216.5m long, the vessel has a large unobstructed deck and a deadweight that has been maximised so it can handle the heaviest components,” says DEME. ”A vessel like Orion has never been seen before.”
Orion is also equipped with an integrated Motion Compensated Pile Gripper, which allows the monopiles to remain vertical while being installed without the need for mooring anchors, DEME says.
