A Nautical Odyssey: A History of The Nautical Institute 1972 – 2002

After 27 years in the British Royal Navy, the author was Deputy Secretary ofThe Nautical Institute from 1984 until 1998 and is thus well placed to tell thestory of a new organisation created in 1972 to meet the needs of professionalmariners.

It was founded by Captain C W Malins, who was at the time Secretary of the Marine Society, ‘To promote high standards of knowledge, competence and qualifications amongst those in control of seagoing craft.’

The chapters chronicle the development of the Institute, and the author’s inclusive style demonstrates how members fought to gain recognition of their profession against considerable opposition from established organisations. As the Institute became better known, and the value of its work appreciated, its influence spread.

A key feature of the Institute’s development was the requirement laid down in the constitution that two thirds of the governing council must be active seafarers.

This one requirement more than any other has coloured the way the Institute has set out to raise standards. This is done not from a position of regulatory authority, nor from a position of corporate finance, but from the position of best practice conditioned by a duty of care.

This book identifies a number of remarkable achievements.

The Institute’s confidential marine accident reporting scheme provides a positive forum without fear or favour to learn from the experiences of others.

Publishing has been a major success and the journal Seaways is read and enjoyed throughout the maritime world.

The influence of the Institute’s professional advice is felt throughout the international shipping community and reinforced by a vibrant worldwide branch structure. The author has conveyed how the voluntary efforts of so many members has contributed to a professional organisation which now commands worldwide respect in maritime circles.
