Coastal Surveillance for Poland
Atlas Elektronik, BAR Systems Bremen based German subsidiary, has received a ? 5morder from the Polish Border Guard for a coastal surveillance system. The pilot scheme will provide surveillance of the Polish coastline from the Russian border to the Hel peninsula, north of the Gdansk Bight. Further extensions to the scheme are planned in two phases with procurement decisions expected by the end of this year and in 2005.
The system will include radar sensors for sea and air surveillance, infrared sensors for thermal imaging and radio sensors including GMDSS facilities. The initial phase of deployment also includes a new management system with situation displays which will be extended to include planning aids for assignment of necessary forces and vehicles in addition to exchange of data with other naval and maritime organisations and authorities.
Around 85% of the cost of the project is being financed by the European Union, which maintains strong interest in the future safety of member states’ outer borders.
The EU is already financing similar projects in other prospective member countries such as Bulgaria and Romania.
