EMS is the Tork of the Town
There has been much talk in the boatbuilding industry recently about a new product from Essex UK based Torkmaster Ltd which will make its debut at the METS exhibition in Amsterdam next month.
The Energy Management System (EMS) is a truly multi-speed load sensing generator which automatically changes speed according to the ship’s electrical load. Developed by Torkmaster over the last three years, EMS comes complete with a management system which controls the generators, determining how many to run and at which speed. It can take two shore supplies which it automatically examines and converts to the on board supply and frequency. Uninterrupted power supply (UPS) is built into EMS, guaranteeing continuous stable power even in the event of a generator failure, a critical consideration for applications such as hydrographic survey vessels.
EMS can automatically slow the generator speed from 1,500 to 1,200rpm which can reduce on board noise levels by some 50% and also substantially reduce diesel emissions. EMS dramatically reduces the problem of lightly loaded generators and is also capable of speeding up to 2,000rpm during peak loading.
Although Torkmaster’s primary sector is the super yacht market for vessels above 30m, there are many commercial marine applications where EMS will be valuable.
