Hypo Hoists Young Engineer Award
Britains most talented young engineers converged on the Old Royal Navy College in Greenwich last month to participate in the 2005 Annual Celebration of Engineering .Taking the top award, Young Engineer for Britain 2005 , and a £ 2,500 prize was 18 year old Tanya Budd of Waingels College in Reading.
Her winning project, called Hypo Hoist, is designed for one person to be able to rescue sailors who have fallen overboard and may be unconscious or suffering from hypothermia. The device enables the sailor in distress to be retrieved single-handedly from the water in a sail-like cradle and rolled gently onto the deck for resuscitation.
Tanya Budd said, ‘When recovering someone from the sea, to guard against the effects of hypothermia and the risks of unconsciousness, it is important to keep them in a horizontal position. That is what Hypo Hoist is designed to do. I am absolutely thrilled to have won this award.’
Peter Hobson, also 18 and from Ponteland Community High School, Tyne and Wear, was named as the Young Engineer who will join Tanya Budd representing the UK at the 2006 International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). He was selected for his Concept Land Yacht design which uses innovative solid sail technology.
