Irish-Norwegian Accord
The Marine Institute of Ireland in Galway and the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Bergen have signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering collaboration and co-operation for seabed surveys and underwater robotics as well as fisheries science, farming and health.
The 5,300gt vessel was launched in July by Kroeger Shipyard, part of Lurssen, for the German Ministry of Research and Education. After final inspection at Lindenau Werft and repair of one of its two Schottel pod drives, the vessel will be handed over to the Baltic Research Institute Warnemunde (IOW), to replace three de-commissioned research vessels.
The four year accord was signed in Dublin by Dr Peter Heffeman, Chief Executive Officer of the Marine Institute and Tore Nepstad, Director of the IMR, in the presence of the Irish Marine Minister Pat Gallagher and Ms Jann Johnssen, Secretary-General of the Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries & Coastal Affairs.
Ireland’s national agency for marine research and development, the Institute, in association with the Geological Survey of Ireland, is currently engaged in what is thought to be the world’s largest hydrographic venture, mapping an Exclusive Economic Zone area ten times larger than Ireland itself. The seven year project, Irish National Seabed Survey (INSS), extends some 1,200 km westward into the Atlantic at depths of more than 4,500m. It is due for completion next year.
