New Generation Survey Vessel Named
HMS Echo, the first of two new oceanographic and hydrographic survey ships for the British Royal Navy has been floated out from Appledore Shipbuilders in Devon and had its naming ceremony.
Appledore was subcontracted to build HMS Echo and sister ship HMS Enterprise by prime contractor Vosper Thornycroft.
HMS Echo now proceeds to Portsmouth for final outfitting and trials prior to an autumn delivery. HMS Enterprise will be handed over in the spring of 2003.
The 90m long, 3,500 tonne ships will be equipped with the latest survey systems, including multi-beam echosounders and sidescan sonars as well as advanced navigation and communication systems.
Survey launches and RIBs for the ships are being supplied by Vosper Thornycroft subsidiary Halmatic.
HMS Echo and HMS Enterprise will be the first Royal Navy ships to employ diesel electric omni-directional podded propulsion for a high degree of manoeuvrability and station keeping while also providing through life cost efficiencies.
Vosper Thornycroft will support and maintain the vessels for a 25 year period after construction.
