Superfast Ferries Takes EastPort Development Project Lead
Superfast Ferries has emerged as the front runner to operate a new passenger and freight service from the proposed £ 32m EastPort harbour development at Great Yarmouth UK. Superfast, part of the Athens-based Attica Enterprises Group, was one of four serious potential operators to submit proposals.
Theirs most closely met EastPort’s requirements in terms of operation and timing for the project.
The next stage of the process comprises a detailed evaluation of the proposal and further negotiations, which are expected to be concluded over the summer.
Superfast began operations in the Baltic Sea last year and last month launched direct daily service between Rosyth and Zeebrugge using ships that can accommodate over 600 passengers, 100 cars and 110 large trucks while still capable of a speed of up to 30 knots.
Their planned expansion into the North Sea market would benefit from a proposed fast freight and passenger service from EastPort to IJmuiden in the Netherlands. The ports and local authorities of IJmuiden and Great Yarmouth are linked via the European Economic Investment Grouping.
The EastPort development envisions one ro-ro terminal initially and space for a second, general purpose quays to accommodate two ships up to 160m in length requiring 8m draught, and 11 hectares of reclaimed back-up land.
