Terminal Chalks up First Year Success

What is said to be Europes most advanced handling facility, the unique high-tech Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) in Hamburg has handled morethan half a million TEUs in its first year of operation.

Comprehensive survey works set to start in September will establish the acceptability of potential impacts to both historical artefacts and marine life. The UK Government’s Environment Agency and bodies such as English Nature will be consulted before permission to proceed can be granted by DEFRA.

The largely automated facility, where gantry cranes, automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and portal cranes are all computer controlled, had a ‘positive year’ said owners, port operating concern HHLA and German container shipping firm Hapag-Lloyd.
