Tugs of the World – 3rd Edition

The publishers stated aim is; ‘to produce the finest tug reference book ever’ and claim to have worked continuously over the past twelve months to expand and update the content of this very large directory. In this latest version, now containing 815 pages, specification and performance data is included for over 4769 vessels.

The main body of information relates to 2996 vessels of over 2,400hp and typically includes;

owner/operator or management company names, tug type, year built and yard, classification, flag, tonnage, dimensions, machinery, bollard pull, service/ maximum speeds, horsepower and home port. Many entries are supported by data on tank capacities, winches and towing gear and useful facts on emergency intervention equipment, communication systems, accommodation and safety aids. Less powerful tugs are listed separately in an abridged form.

Tugs of the World includes a directory of tug owners, listing addresses, telephone, fax, email and Internet details for some 930 owners, operators and managers.

The comprehensive series of indices is an important feature of this register. An alphabetical index of all tugs is provided along with an index of owners or operators with their tug fleet lists, an index of tugs by BHP rating and a listing by port of registry.

This edition includes a few more photographs than previous registers but this can only be regarded as a sample of some representative vessels.

A colour section includes a cross-section of modern tugs and a black and white section depicts a selection of vessels of every type.

Purchasers of the CD and On-line versions, which are not illustrated, automatically receive quarterly updates for one year. The CD contains three main files to enable the purchaser to use the information on tugs, owners and managers in their own corporate systems.

OPL currently publish a series of specialist vessel registers, including volumes on mobile drilling units, survey vessels, oilfield supply ships and construction vessels and claim that this new book meets an ongoing requirement for a comprehensive and up to date reference on all types of tugs in service world-wide.
