Subsea 7 wins grant to install ‘PowerBundle’
Subsea 7 and its technology partner FLASC have been given a grant by the UK government to develop an offshore energy storage system that will sit on the seabed to store wind-generated electricity.
The ‘PowerBundle’ was selected to receive a £471,760 (€563,000) grant from the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) after a longer duration storage competition promoting the need for technologies to provide long-term energy storage.
Subsea 7 will use its subsea pipeline bundle technology and combine it with FLASC’s hydro-pneumatic energy storage technology.
FLASC is a spin-off company from teh University of Malta
Phase 1 of the project, making preparations for proposed technologies to be deployed on the UK national electricity grid, are already under way.
Phase 2 will be to build and test a grid-connected demonstrator.
Separately, Subsea 7 is to get its fleet upgraded with a secure hybrid communications network by smart technology provider Marlink, which will give it a guaranteed throughput and a separate network for crew comms.
Subsea 7 operates one of the most diverse fleets in the market, including chartered and high specification owned vessels.
