£Multi-million development agreed for Liverpool port

Birkenhead Port, in the Mersey region, is to be revitalised with a completely new Eastfloat Terminal with thousands more square metres of storage capacity.

The terminal is just 7km away from the Port of Liverpool, which is also owned by Peel Ports. It will handle ‘a diverse range of cargoes’ as well as renewables and offshore equipment, the owner says, serving markets across the UK and overseas.

The facility will handle bulk, steel, timber and offshore equipment for offshore wind farms.

“Investment in new plant and machinery for the Terminal is also well under way – including the installation of a new Liebherr 180 crane – and development opportunities are being explored across the site, including the potential for two cement silos with a total capacity of 14,000 mt,” said Seb Gardiner, managing director, Peel Ports Logistics. “This investment reflects our commitment to bringing the Eastfloat Terminal back to life – we are both restoring its heritage and transforming it into a vibrant, modern logistics hub.

“The Mersey region is firmly at the heart of UK trade, and restoring Eastfloat will allow us to keep meeting the demands of the most complex and challenging cargo movements.”

The Terminal’s transformation is part of Peel Ports Group’s ongoing strategy to expand its logistics and port services, supporting UK supply chains and delivering world-class facilities to customers across a wide range of sectors.

Peel Ports Group is the UK’s second largest port operator, owning and operating six of the UK’s most important ports (Liverpool, Heysham, Manchester Ship Canal, Medway (Sheerness / Chatham), Clydeport and Great Yarmouth).

It has recently announced a further £10 million will be spend on the Great Yarmouth site, bringing to £70 million the development spending on the port, which is having its Northern Terminal redeveloped to accommodate offshore wind projects.
