Van Oord wins three coastline projects

The Administratia Bazinala de Apa Dobrogea-Litoral awarded Van Oord the design and construction of 6.7 km of resilient coastline for the Romanian seaside resorts of Costinesti, Mangalia-Saturn and 2 Mai.

Van Oord is already working on similar projects in the region such as replacing 6 km of coastline at the resort of Eforie on the Black Sea. This latest deal will bring the length of Romanian coast bolstered by Van Oord to more than 26 km.

To protect these popular coastal areas from further erosion, Van Oord will design and build new groynes and beaches using a trailing suction hopper dredger. Several of the current breakwaters will be removed and redeveloped to make way for more nature-friendly alternatives.

As well as reinforcing the coastline, space will be created for nature conservation and recreation with the addition of artificial reefs and bio-structures. Sixty-four hectares of seabed will be replanted with varying species of seagrass and algae to stimulate and enrich marine life.

The construction of the groynes is expected to start in 2024 following a design phase of around 12 months and continue until 2026.
